    2014 YOUTH MALE ATHLETE PRESENTED WITH THE SASKATCHEWAN SPORT AWARD
    Marco Schumann was presented with the Saskatchewan Sport Award for 2014 Youth Male Athlete of the Year by Jerry Shoemaker, Sask Sport Inc. Board of Director and Saskatchewan Amateur Speed Skating Association, Provincial Coach, Tim Comfort in front of a very large crowd during the Saskatoon Lions Speed Skating Club's year-end dinner and awards banquet on April 19 at Bethlehem School. This award presentation took place just prior to Saskatoon Lions Speed Skating Club's guest speaker Olympic Gold medalist and Order of Canada appointee Catriona Le May Doan.

    CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR CANADA'S TOP ATHLETES AND COACHES IN SASKATCHEWAN
    Kelly Block, Member of Parliament (Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar), on behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), reiterated the Government of Canada's continued support for the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sport Institute Network at a media event held in conjunction with the Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan on April 14th 2015 at the University of Saskatchewan, Physical Activity Centre. The Government of Canada is investing close to $16 million per year in the national network of seven Canadian Sport Centres and Institutes, which provide world-class training, sport medicine, sport science and lifestyle services and support to Canada's top athletes and coaches.     2015 PARASPORT JUMPSTART FUND NOW OPEN
    Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and the Canadian Paralympic Committee announced the opening of the 2015 Parasport Jumpstart Fund that will help more kids get in the game. Applications are now open and Canadian sport and community groups are invited to apply for the 2015 fund. This program is also supported by the Government of Canada's Sport Support Program, will help cover the cost of sports and recreational programs for children between the ages of four and 18, who are financially disadvantaged and living with a disability. The fund supports the creation of a new program or the expansion of an existing successful initiative and may be used towards registration, transportation and equipment costs for children within approved Parasport programs.

    NATIONAL ABORIGINAL HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS
    Team Saskatchewan's men's and women's hockey teams successfully defended their titles at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships on May 2, 2015. The female squad defeated Ontario 3-2, while Saskatchewan's male squad earned a 4-3 victory over Alberta.     SWIM RESEARCHER AT U OF R GETS BOOST TO HELP CANADA'S OLYMPIC TEAM
    The University of Regina has been awarded research money aimed at improving the performance of Team Canada's swim team at the Olympics. Kinesiology professor John Barden has received a grant of $110,700 from Own The Podium, a group designed to help athletes win medals. Barden is using motion sensors to analyze how competitive swimmers move in the water. Read More

     

    COACHES WEEK IN SASKATCHEWAN
    May 23 - 30, 2015
    The purpose of Coaches Week is to:
  • Recognize the valuable contribution coaches make to amateur sport and our communities;
  • Promote coaching and encourage people to get involved; and
  • Offer coach education opportunities for Saskatchewan coaches.
    The Coaches Association of Saskatchewan would like to invite and encourage all sport organizations and institutions that rely on coaches to participate in some way to celebrate Coaches Week. Find out More

    SASK SPORT INC. ANNOUNCES THE MARCH ATHLETE OF THE MONTH AWARD RECIPIENT
    Samantha Ryan of Saskatoon is the recipient of the Sask Sport Inc. March Athlete of the Month Award. She was nominated by Swim Saskatchewan Inc. Ryan was named to both the 2015 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Championship team and 2015 Toronto Para Pan Am Games team thanks to a solid performance at the 2015 CanAm's, Para Pan Am Games and IPC World Championship Trials. Ryan won silver medals in the 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley, as well as a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle. In addition, she broke the Canadian record in the 100m butterfly event.     The Aboriginal Coaches and Officials Program have several upcoming training and development opportunities for Aboriginal peoples to become involved in softball as a coach or an official.     CAAWS WOMEN AND LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS
    Sask Sport Inc., in partnership with the Canadian Association of the Advancement of Women in Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS), is offering CAAWS Women and Leadership Workshops. Three 3-hour workshops are available, designed to be delivered to a female only audience, addressing women working or volunteering in Canada's sport and physical activity sector (administrators, coaches, officials, board members, volunteers etc.). These workshops are appropriate for hosting at events such as AGM's, coach development clinics, sport conferences, volunteer development etc. if interested in hosting a workshop, contact: Noreen Murphy, Sask Sport Inc.
