    2016 ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD FINALISTS ANNOUNCED
    Sask Sport Inc. is pleased to announce the 2016 Athlete of the Year award finalists for the Saskatchewan Sport Awards. Every year, three finalists are selected for each of the six Athlete of the Year Award categories: Youth-Male, Youth-Female, Male, Female, Team and Master. The award recipients are then chosen by Sask Sport Inc.'s active and affiliate members and announced at a later date.

    The finalists for the 2016 Athlete of the Year Awards are:

    Registration is now open for ParticipACTION 150 Play List events and programs. Spread the word to your member organizations to register an opportunity for members of their community to check sports and physical activities off their 150 Play Lists to:

    Passport 2017, a free mobile and web app that is designed to help Canadians discover and explore all the nation has to offer for Canada's 150th anniversary for Confederation. Passport 2017 will be the gateway to thousands of events taking place across the country throughout 2017 and will offer users a constantly updated feed of news, stories, photos and videos.     SASK SPORT INC. ANNOUNCES THE NOVEMBER ATHLETE OF THE MONTH AWARD RECIPIENT
    Noah Picton of Regina was the recipient of the Sask Sport Inc. November Athlete of the Month Award. He was nominated by Football Saskatchewan. Picton, the starting quarterback for the University of Regina Rams, received the Hec Crighton Trophy as the top player in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) football. He is the first Rams player to win the award and only the second recipient from Saskatchewan. He was also named a CIS first-team all-star. Media Release

     

    SASK SPORT INC. ANNOUNCES THE DECEMBER ATHLETE OF THE MONTH AWARD RECIPIENT
    Marco Schumann of Saskatoon was the recipient of the Sask Sport Inc. December Athlete of the Month Award. He was nominated by the Saskatchewan Amateur Speed Skating Association. Schumann finished first in the 1,500m Super Final and third in overall points at the Canadian Junior Short Track Championships in Calgary. He also placed third in the 1,500m, sixth in the 500m and ninth in the 1,000m. He became the first Saskatchewan speed skater to qualify for the World Junior Short Track Championships (which are to be held this month in Austria) in the past 20 years. Media Release

     

    PARASPORT EQUIPMENT & CLUB DEVELOPMENT GRANT DEADLINES
    Active or Affiliate members of Sask Sport Inc. are eligible to apply for support, but in addition, member organizations may partner with local or community organizations/clubs to further develop capacity for Parasport programming in the province for equipment and club development. Application Deadlines: Clubs must submit applications to PSGB's and Districts by March 22nd and/or September 22nd annually. PSGB deadlines to submit applications to Sask Sport are April 1st and October 1st annually. Learn More

    REGISTRATION FOR VISTA 2017 IN TORONTO IS NOW OPEN
    Up until 15 June 2017 there is a special discount rate of CAD $400 to attend the leading conference for parasport experts
    Registration for September 20 - 23 VISTA 2017 conference for sports scientists and experts in parasport in Toronto, Canada, is now open with organizers offering a special early bird discount for attendees. The theme is "Opportunities and Challenges in Paralympic Sport Science and Sport Medicine Support," and around 300 of the world's leading sports scientists, sport medicine practitioners, classifiers, coaches, athletes and sport administrators are expected to attend.

    Reaching Youth through Sports: Trauma-Informed Physical Activity

    Doc Wayne, a non-profit organization that connects with youth through sports has a specially designed curriculum, Do the Good (DtG), built on the therapeutic model of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and The Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency Framework. In this webinar, you will learn about Do the Good, a trauma-informed sports intervention.

    Paralympic Sport Development Fund
    The Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) invites Canadian sport organizations and clubs to apply, starting today, for the 2017-2018 granting round of the Paralympic Sport Development Fund: The Paralympic Sport Development Fund (formerly the System Development Fund) targets sport initiatives helping develop athletes, from playground to podium. Through this Fund, the CPC invests in sport development programming including recruitment initiatives, coaching, equipment, competition and more. Funds can be used to support the creation of a new program or go towards the expansion of an existing successful initiative. Funding amounts of between $5,000 and $15,000 will be available.

    Have you heard about the CTV Athlete of the Week?
    Every week, CTV News features local athletes as their Athlete of the Week, showcasing the talents of athletes from across the province. CTV is reaching out to local High Schools, Athletic Associations and other sport organizations to encourage you to nominate some of your own as an Athlete of the Week! From all the nominations gathered each week, CTV will select an Athlete of the Week who will be featured in CTV Morning Live, CTV News @ Noon, CTV News @ 6 and CTV Late news, PLUS they’ll be entered to receive a monthly prize pack from Subway.
    Visit your local CTV News website (CTVRegina.ca or CTVSaskatoon.ca) and click the 'Athlete of the Week' button on the right hand side of the page and fill out the information.

     

    THE SOVEREIGN'S MEDAL FOR VOLUNTEERS
    Think of those who think about others
    Have you ever thought to yourself that you would like to take the time to recognize someone who often puts others before themselves? That you would you like to acknowledge the exemplary involvement of a volunteer you know? The Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers is presented by Governor General David Johnston to those whose efforts and generosity have served their communities.

    Saskatchewan Sports can nominate its hard working volunteers as candidates for this prestigious national honour. Any person who is a Canadian citizen and who has made significant, sustained and unpaid contributions to their community in Canada or abroad is eligible.
