    TODD FUCHS ELECTED PRESIDENT OF SASK SPORT INC.
    Todd Fuchs was elected President of Sask Sport Inc.'s Board of Directors at the sport federation's Annual General Meeting in Regina. Fuchs joined the board in 2013 after being nominated by Football Saskatchewan. Fuchs has served on the Fund Development, Lottery and Administration Centres and Provincial KidSport Committees. Prior to joining the board, Fuchs served as the President of the University of Regina Rams' Board of Directors in 2009 and 2010 after joining the board in 1996. Fuchs, who played junior football with the Rams from 1990-94, has also coached youth flag football. He is currently the Chief Financial Officer at the Brandt Group of Companies in Regina.

    Fuchs takes over for outgoing president Jeff Herback, who will remain on the Board of Directors as Past President. Herback has served on the Audit, Aboriginal Sport Leadership Council, District Strategic, Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan Management (Chair), KidSport and Sport (Chair) Committees. Prior to joining the board, Herback was President of Swim Saskatchewan Inc.

    The other Sask Sport Inc. Board members elected to Sask Sport Inc.'s 2015-2016 Executive are:

    MARK MCMORRIS PRESENTED WITH SASKATCHEWAN SPORT AWARD FOR 2014 MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
    Mark McMorris received his Saskatchewan Sport Award for 2014 Male Athlete of the Year during a media event on Monday, June 22nd held by Saskatchewan Ski Association and Saskatchewan Snowboard Association at the Saskatchewan Sport Hall of Fame. The award was presented to Mark by Saskatchewan Snowboard Association Vice President Vice, Murray Ernst and Sask Sport Inc. Board of Director, Brenda Bathgate. Mark McMorris was honoured and received his award in front of his family, friends and Manager, Adam Burwell and special guests, Saskatchewan youth snowboarders.     TIANNA KENNETT PRESENTED WITH SASKATCHEWAN SPORT AWARD FOR 2014 YOUTH-FEMALE OF THE YEAR
    Tianna Kennett was presented with her Saskatchewan Sport Award for 2014 Youth-Female of the Year at her Manor School Grade 12 Graduation ceremonies. The award presentation was kept very quiet until the surprise presentation was announced and made by Monte McNaughton, Manor School, Athletic Director; Monte is also be Tianna's wrestling Coach. Tianna was surprised and thrilled to receive this award on such an important day as her graduation and in front of her family and her high-school friends and teachers. Read More

SIMTAG aims to ensure the long term growth and development of amateur sport in Saskatchewan by promoting the benefits of amateur sport.     SPORT THROUGH HISTORY
    The Department of Canadian Heritage has chosen Sport through History as this year's theme for Canada History Week from July 1-7, 2015. This provides an opportunity to highlight activities related to the history of sport as well as a broader range of historical activities and milestones. Some of the topics will include the 50th anniversary of the National Flag of Canada, Canada's oldest sports and sport organizations, athletes leaving their mark, the evolution of sports equipment, sports brought to Canada through immigration, sport depicted through art (films, paintings, photos), sport events, sport and the wars, women in sport, history of torch bearers (e.g. Pan and Parapan American Games), and inclusiveness of sport (Parapan American Games). Canada History Week helps Canadians learn more about what has shaped our country as we know it today. We encourage you to share the activities and communications that you may be planning during this time which are related to the history of sport by using hashtag #historyweek2015 and #YearofSport.

    ABORIGINAL YOUTH AWARD RECIPIENTS NAMED
    Sask Sport Inc. was pleased to sponsor the Male and Female Sport and Recreation Award recipients at the recent 17th Annual SaskTel Aboriginal Youth Awards of Excellence Gala. The Wicihitowin Foundation established the awards in 1997 with the support of the public, government, and private sector.

    The Male Sport and Recreation winner was Nolan McKay, a boxer with the Nelson Boxing Club in Saskatoon; and the Female Sport and Recreation Award Winner was Lauryn Prokop, a basketball player with St. Joseph High School in Saskatoon.

     

    2014 NORTH AMERICAN INDIGENOUS GAMES STUDY REVEALS PROFOUND SOCIAL IMPACT
    Games lead to healthier lifestyle choices, cultural pride and increased self-worth
    In July of 2014 over 4000 Indigenous Youth gathered to celebrate the power of sport, culture and community at the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) held in Regina. Praxis Research/Strategy was engaged by the NAIG Council to conduct an evaluation of the impact of the Games on participants and team volunteers. The final report, based on over 580 survey responses from participants, coaches and volunteers, presented significant positive social impacts.

    THE BIGGEST RISK IS KEEPING KIDS INDOORS
    For the first time, the Report Card takes a stand on play in nature and the outdoors-with its risks-and includes a Position Statement on Active Outdoor Play developed by the Healthy Active Living and Obesity Research Group at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute (HALO-CHEO), ParticipACTION and a group of 12 other organizations.

    • A Full Report which includes background on our methodology and process, in-depth analyses, summaries of key research, charts and figures and complete references.

    SASK SPORT INC. ANNOUNCES THE APRIL ATHLETE OF THE MONTH AWARD RECIPIENT
    Tianna Kennett of Manor is the recipient of the Sask Sport Inc. April Athlete of the Month Award. She was nominated by the Saskatchewan Amateur Wrestling Association. Kennett won a gold medal and received the Outstanding Wrestler Award at the Wrestling Canada National Championships on April 11. She has now qualified to compete at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championships. Read More

     

    SASK SPORT INC. ANNOUNCES THE MAY ATHLETE OF THE MONTH AWARD RECIPIENT
    David Samayoa of Regina was the recipient of the Sask Sport Inc. May Athlete of the Month Award. He was nominated by the Saskatchewan Weightlifting Association. Samayoa will represent Canada at the Pan Am Games in July, following his performance at the Canadian Weightlifting Championships, where he placed first, set two provincial records and achieved personal bests. He has won back-to-back national titles and is currently the fourth ranked overall weightlifter in Canada.

    SASK SPORT RESPONSE TO TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION RECOMMENDATIONS
    Audra Young, Chair of Sask Sport Inc.'s Aboriginal Sport Leadership Council issued the following statement on behalf of Sask Sport Board of Directors in response to the Calls to Action report issued by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada. Media Release

     

    REGINA TO HOST VOLLEYBALL CANADA CHAMPIONSHIPS
    Regina is proud to announce it will host the 2016-2017, 15U Volleyball Canada Championships – Regina. Regina previously hosted the event in 2013 and 2014, and is excited to welcome volleyball teams from across the country back to the city. “We are happy to welcome Volleyball Canada back to Regina as we prepare to host another successful 15U Championship,” said Mayor Michael Fougere. “Our city has something special to offer and we continue to showcase Regina as a great place to host these types of events.” Media Release
