    SASK SPORT INC. HONOURS THE BEST OF 2015 AT THE SASKATCHEWAN SPORT AWARDS
    Sask Sport Inc. honoured the province's best of 2015 at the Saskatchewan Sport Awards presentations held at the Conexus Arts Centre on March 21. The Saskatchewan Sport Awards program is designed to celebrate outstanding achievements of Saskatchewan's amateur athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers.

    The 2015 Saskatchewan Sport Award recipients are:

  • Youth Male Athlete of the Year: Carson Perkins, Bienfait, Baseball
  • Youth Female Athlete of the Year: Samantha Ryan Saskatoon, Para-Swim
  • Male Athlete of the Year (A tied vote): Lucas Morin, Saskatoon, Speed Skating; Kelly Wiebe, Swift Current, Athletics
  • Female Athlete of the Year: Brianne Theisen-Eaton, Humboldt, Athletics
  • Team of the Year: Team Sask 16U Boys, Regina, Water Polo
  • Master Athlete of the Year: Muriel Gieni, Saskatoon, Athletics
  • Volunteer Award: Larry Orth, Saskatoon, Baseball,
  • Coach of the Year: Lisa Thomaidis, Saskatoon, Huskie Athletics - Basketball
  • Male Coach Dedication Award: Brian Towriss, Saskatoon, Football
  • Female Coach Dedication Award: Jackie Powell, Swift Current, Special Olympics
  • Male Official Award: Jason Coutu, Saskatoon, Speed Skating
  • Female Official Award: Sara Toth, Regina, Diving

    "I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of the award recipients and finalists on their accomplishments," said Todd Fuchs, President of Sask Sport Inc. "2015 was designated as 'the Year of Sport' in Canada, and our Saskatchewan athletes rose to the occasion and had an amazing year. They were supported by a highly-skilled and dedicated network of volunteers, officials, coaches and administrators, who are the foundation of amateur sport in Saskatchewan."

    SASKATCHEWAN PARA-SPORT TOUR - DREAM RELAY
    This Dream Tour is all about bringing awareness of Para-sports and how to get involved in sport Province Wide. Kids can be excluded from sports due to a variety of reasons including but not limited to ability, economics, demographics, people in cultural environments that deter motivation to engage in physical activity, distance from facilities and lack of access to transportation, or lack of access to resources.

    During the tour, Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sport Association will be holding "Just Try It" sessions: June 7 in Prince Albert, June 11 in Saskatoon, June 14 in Yorkton, June 16 in Swift Current and June 17 in Regina. Learn More

     

     

    SASKATCHEWAN COACHES CONFERENCE
    May 6 & 7 - Saskatoon Inn and Conference Centre
    This Multi-sport Coaches conference is designed to benefit all levels of coach from all sports. Featuring leading edge topics delivered in three workshops, twelve breakout sessions, and two keynote speakers. If you coach: Secondary School, High School, Club, Provincial Teams, Canada Games, NAIG, First Nation Games, University, National Team or Professional and want to continue "Making a Difference" this conference is for you! Coaches earn Professional Development points towards their NCCP Maintenance of Certification. www.saskcoach.ca/2016conference

     

     

    PARASPORT EQUIPMENT & CLUB DEVELOPMENT GRANT
    Active or Affiliate members of Sask Sport Inc. are eligible to apply for support, but in addition, member organizations may partner with local or community organizations/clubs to further develop capacity for Parasport programming in the province for equipment and club development. Learn More

    SASK SPORT INC. ANNOUNCES THE FEBRUARY ATHLETE OF THE MONTH AWARD RECIPIENT
    Noah Choboter of Regina is the recipient of the Sask Sport Inc. February Athlete of the Month Award. He was nominated by Swim Saskatchewan Inc. It was a record-breaking month for Choboter, who set nine provincial records - a feat never accomplished in Saskatchewan before. He won a gold medal in the 100 metre backstroke and took home silver in the 50m backstroke at the Eastern Canadian Open Swim Meet. At the CIS Swimming Championships, he won gold in the 100m backstroke and 200m backstroke for the University of Regina Swim Team. Prior to the event, only one swimmer from the U of R had ever won a national gold medal. Choboter has qualified to compete in the Olympic Trials. Media Release

     

    FEDERAL BUDGET OFFERS SUPPORT FOR SPORT AND RECREATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE
    Finance Minister Bill Morneau released his first budget, Growing the Middle Class, and the sport, physical activity and recreation sector was the beneficiary of infrastructure support for community and recreational facilities.

    YOU CAN PLAY! Video Launched by U of S
    The Breaking the Silence Conference is directed towards educating future teachers, coaches and leaders about LGBTQ2 inclusion in the classroom (and on the playing fields). The U of S Huskies were a featured presenter at this conference, where they launched their You can Play video. It is a great show of leadership on behalf of Huskie athletics with their coaches and athletes to encourage athletes of all orientations to be involved in sport. Video Link

     

    FUELLING A LIFETIME OF PARTICIPATION
    Canada may be a sport-loving nation, but when it comes to access to sport for Canadian women, it has a long way to go for the win. So say the findings from a new research publication, unveiled by Canada’s dairy farmers and the Canadian Association for Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS). The report, entitled Women in Sport—Fuelling a Lifetime of Participation, highlights the severe gender inequality for Canadian women in sport, and is the first of its kind, pairing data and research from academic journals and peer-reviewed articles, with primary research obtained from national surveys and the analysis of four years of female sports media coverage.
