Dispute Resolution

Sask Sport Inc. is developing a dispute resolution program which will provide support services and expertise to Active and Affiliate members of Sask Sport Inc. and their members who may be involved in sports-related disputes such as athlete or coach selection, athlete agreements, sponsor agreements, human resource issues, and discipline hearings including harassment cases and complaints.

There are a variety of disputes that occur in sport and failure to provide effective resolutions to these types of conflict can result in court action which is often costly, unsatisfactory, and takes a great deal of time.

There is a need to extend and offer a dispute resolution program to provincial and community levels of sport as a means of dealing with disputes that cannot or have not been resolved internally. Furthermore, a provincial program of dispute resolution specifically for sport is desirable to maintain the integrity and credibility of the amateur sport system in Saskatchewan. Advantages of such a program are as follows:

    • To resolve conflicts quickly, effectively and efficiently, in particular where an athlete's entitlement to compete is at stake.
    • Less costly than traditional courts of justice.
    • Utilizes trained and experienced arbitrators and mediators incorporating a general knowledge of the sport system to make decisions.
